Welcome paul!
Please feel free to ask questions...its a very friendly board here, and you should find plenty of good advice for starting gms, particularly on the scenarios in the rulebook.
Lets us know how your first session goes !

Thanks! Will do!
Good luck with your first session! As long as you remember 'story first, rules second' you'll be fine![]()

Last night was probably the most fluid game I've ever run. I thought we'd hit some snags coming from a supremely combat heavy game (Top Secret S.I.'s Commando rules) into CoC. So fun. The one guy at the table w/no Lovecraft or CoC knowledge chose Egyptian as another language. Sometimes the stars align.
Thanks for all your support everyone! Looks like we'll have a few months of fun ahead.
Gah...should have gone here first but typical fail for forum newbie!
My name is Simon. About to hit 40. Have spent 22 years in Security related activities/Law Enforcement. I am based in Western Australia but spent 8 of the last 11 years working in SE-Asia. Married with one giant furry child...our beloved German Shepherd. Started RPGs in 1985...moved onto CoC in 1989. Needless to say a huge fan of HPL. Go to the odd Sci-Fi/Fantasy convention when I can. I am part of a group of 5 remaining CoC devotees...our ranks have dwindled over the years. I have always written various things in my spare time and am hoping to finally step up to running a campaign when time allows. Currently working 84 hours/week and doing my degree at Uni (BA double major History/Philosophy).
Really looking forward to getting to know people on these boards and tapping into what is an immense amount of knowledge and creative expertise. If you are Perth based and are looking to expand your CoC group, hit me with a PM.
Cheers.
I discovered the forums when researching Call of Cthulhu and various other RPGs. I have been listening to the audio recordings of Horror on the Orient Express and enjoying them very much.
I live in South East London and would be very interested in giving CoC a try, though I am unsure as to how to go about this!
Hello and welcome!
I would suggest the first thing to try is finding a local game or hobby shop; the staff there will be more than happy (eager, even) to help you get in contact with any local gamers or gaming groups. There is also YSDC's own Player Directory, which due to your location should give you plenty of contacts. In addition, there are many people who run games online (via forum, email or video-chat) - this isn't my area of expertise but there are several sites which should be locatable with a quick Google search.
Finally, if all else fails, you could just buy the rulebook and run a game for your friends - although choose wisely, as atmosphere is important.
I hope you find yourself a game soon, and have fun!

You, too, will come to understand fear as I have.
It would be nice to find a pre-existing game. I'll do some research and see if anything promising presents itself.
I've been taking a look at the Quick Start rules and included adventure. Is that recommended?
The rules, yes, absolutely; they're quite simple, but if you're joining an existing group the less time spent getting you up to speed, the sooner you can start to playAs for the included adventure, it is probably the most common, most frequently run CoC adventure in existence, so a well-established group will probably have run it long ago, and it will give you a good idea of how a game of CoC is intended to play out.
With my Keeper's hat on, however, I would generally say read as little as possible when it comes to scenarios - the more familiarity one has with spells, creatures, plot devices etc the less the impact will be upon encountering them in-game, and the more temptation there will be to meta-game.
One more link for you - the UK Role Players forums are another great way to find gamers in your area. That and the Player Directory here are how I got my current group together, so I can vouch for their efficacy!

Hello, my name is Adam. I live outside Boston. I am a player in Numania's CoC game, and loving it. We just finished Edge of Darkness last night, and it was awesome.
We rotate our games in our group; AD&D, Marvel, Gamma World, Star Wars, and a few others. I was wondering how CoC was going to evoke horror when we are a bunch of adult guys drinking beer at a table in a fairly well lit basement. But it totally did; even with all the typical game-table chit-chat and goofiness, that scenario made us feel like we were really there. SO DIFFERENT than AD&D!
Anyway, glad to see there is a great forum for this game; we will be playing for a good while!
Hello all. I'm Michael Curtis, an archivist (thanks H.P. for influencing me to choose a career based around mouldering records and strange tomes) and freelance writer and game designer. Some of you might know me as the author of "The Dungeon Alphabet," "Stonehell Dungeon," and co-author on Goblinoid Games' Lovecraftian supplement "Realms of Crawling Chaos." For the past few years, I've been submerged in the world of sword & sorcery RPGs and I am really trying to escape back to my love of Call of Cthulhu and the BRP.
I've recently uprooted myself from my former home on Long Island, NY and am now living in Ulster County of the same state. With a change of locale comes hopefully a change in direction for me role-playing and design-wise, and I'm anticipation getting a CoC campaign running as soon as I can find, convince, coax, or summon a handful of players willing to expand their own vistas.
Despite having own and played CoC since the 4th edition, I must admit that my knowledge of the the game is mostly limited to a handful of Chaosium's supplements (I never played any of the famed published campaigns). On the one hand, I'm looking to increase my knowledge base, but on the other I'm wary of being too well-versed in what has been commercially released for fear it might have undue influence on my own take on the game.
In any case, it's a pleasure to be here and I hope to find my place in the Yog-Sothoth community.
Hey everybody, this is John H from the Nerdbound Podcast. I've been a big fan of RPPR's CoC games and have recently decided to run a one shot for my home group.
Luckily for me I happened upon the Miskatonic University Podcast just recently and have been putting their insight and wisdom to use while putting together my game.
My own RPG background tends towards crunchier systems like D&D and Warhammer so I'm looking forward to something that's a little more story oriented. We'll see if my players feel the same.
You wont regret it John.
