In the myriad old files categorized haphazardly by my brain, I sometimes dream of the Scorched Hill. Of all my childhood recollections, this one experience stands forward as the starting point of my fascination with the grotesque and the terrible. But were it not that other eyes than mine beheld that mysterious phenomenon, I would have doubted that such things could be (and thus have moved on with my life, dismissing the occurrence as one of the vagaries of a febrile imagination).
