The Final Chase – Session 4

Due to some scheduling and communication issues, we only get two players for the second-to-last session, but it all works out, even if it’s a short session. At this point, the tension and pacing have been built up, and everyone sees where things are headed. So we’re all happy with a two hour session even just for two PCs:
- Sara the reporter (Scott)
- Leslie the Dilettante (Jeff)

Now the new star of Azathoth is burning bright in the sky for all to see, things are unraveling as people seem to understand the coming apocalypse – people riot and the army struggles to gain control. Clearly we are near the end.

We open with Leslie in the back of the limousine interrogating Dark Henry. It’s clear at this point that time travel and multiple personas are being used – the spell found in the Basel Codex was read by Henry (and Leslie) long ago, and the ‘dark persona’ ended up being the Dark Henry that has plagued the party since the beginning (and may even have been the one who sent the Files in the first place). When Leslie asks about why things were done a certain way, Dark Henry explains with a wave of the hand, ‘We left that time stream long ago,’ seeming to dismiss Leslie’s inquiry as pointless.

Dark Henry even offers Leslie a partnership in this effort to bring the world to an end, ‘Oh, what we could accomplish together,’ which Leslie naturally dismisses. The two discuss the Basel Codex and its power – how Henry has been split in one of many futures and come back to change this particular present, how the Henry that sent the Files is far off and distant from this particular present, and that things have been already set in motion for this present that cannot be undone.
Things become clearer for Leslie, but then Dark Henry seems to also understand something about the different personalities wandering around the various timestreams. Dark Henry then reaches for his pistol and begins loading it, saying ‘Yes, it would be easy to move from this stream to-‘ BANG. Leslie shoots him dead, then sees a dark shadow move from his corpse and move on, while a light seems to climb to the heavens, which is in line with the Basil Codex and how it seems to work.

Meanwhile, across the warehouse, Sara eyes a blood-covered and seeming catatonic Buster, who holds the Black Marble and one of the circular blades in his hands. After some questioning, he seems to come to and engages Sara, asking ‘What are we afraid of?’ and ‘Why not let Him come?’ Finally, after some back and forth, Buster seems to realize ‘If we as humans are to prove our worth in the universe, we must stand up for ourselves.’ And with that, he looks at the Black Marble and the blade in his hands, and runs off toward a more populated area in Brooklyn.

After that and Dark Henry’s death, Sara and Leslie realize that not only has Buster (who I’m running as an NPC with permission from Karl) clearly lost his mind, but he seems to have some idea of how to bring an end to the coming apocalypse. So they set off in a car to follow him, but are stymied along the way by riots and army roadblocks. They catch glimpses of Buster along the way, either sucking souls into the Black Marble or cutting up those who get in his way.

Eventually they find him climbing a tall building in Brooklyn (which was hinted at in one of the Files), clutching the Marble that is surging with power and yelling madly about sending the big burning star back to where it came.

End scene.
