  • Cthulhu by Gaslight, 3rd Edition

Cthulhu by Gaslight, 3rd edition coverQuietly released by Chaosium on Wednesday, Cthulhu by Gaslight sees its 3rd edition after a near quarter century hiatus.

As the name suggests, Cthulhu by Gaslight is a Call of Cthulhu supplement that allows for roleplaying in the world of 1890s England. The first and second editions appeared in 1986 and 1988 respectively and so it's a welcome sight to see the release of a new edition in what many consider to be an underserved setting for Call of Cthulhu.

Cthulhu by Gaslight is currently available as a PDF directly from Chaosium, no doubt with a print edition to follow shortly. As for what's new in the 3rd edition, the following YSDC thread may also shed a little light (along with some typographical discussion).

    Cthulhu by Gaslight

    Horror Roleplaying in 1890s England

In the 1890s, Cthulhu and his minions share the globe with the mighty British Empire. But they owe allegiance to an empire of their own — a dark and cruel design on ownership of the world and on the dreams of humanity. Even among the green fields of rural England, only thoughtful and energetic intervention keeps the shadows at bay.

Cthulhu by Gaslight offers a thoroughly developed Victorian England setting for use with Call of Cthulhu. Character creation has been enhanced with new wrinkles. There are articles on the Victorian world, crime, politics, personalities, and so forth. There are extensive sections on the Cthulhu Mythos in Britain — creatures, cults, and books — and a précis of Ramsey Campbell's Severn River Valley. Also included are tips on running various types of Gaslight-era campaigns, a gazetteer of intriguing British myths and legends, a selection of friends and foes from Victorian fiction, and a lengthy bibliography/filmography of suggested reading and viewing. Rounding out this edition are a pair of Victorian-era scenarios — one an urban adventure set in London, the other set in rural Dartmoor. Includes a two-colour, fold-out map of the City of London.

    By William Barton & Kevin A. Ross. 192 pages, with handouts. 8.5 x 11".

    Cover art by Paul Carrick.

    Price: $20.95 (US) PDF

Can't wait to get my hands on this as I love the Gaslight setting. And from what I've read it looks like they have done a good job in updating the book plus that front cover is rather spiffy what.

Gaslight is one of the ONLY settings I haven't written a scenario for. But... I've started watching loads of Sherlock Holmes stuff on Netflicks, so I am gearing up to get this book and change that.

This is one of the few "era source books" I have been unable to source/ acquire on eBay. Order will be placed shortly.

      Lovely cover!

Well I finally ponied up the money and I've got to say its excellent, worth every penny. I'm sure those involved have heard this a lot all ready (and if not why not) but well done to everyone you really have done a fantastic job updating and tweaking a classic and you've made the old girl shine again. P.S And it was great to see the art of Mr Ramos being used again. And Amigospanx YES!

I was eagerly awaiting this re-edition... why did they publish it quietly? it wasn't even on the front page of their website. Chaosium has a very strange idea of marketing (and website design) . I have a question: Did they include the "Gaslight Equipment Catalogue" with this edition?

Whilst there are a couple of pages of general prices in the new book the Equipment Catalogue is still a separate Monograph but well worth buying especially now with the 25% off Keepers week offer.
I must admit if it was not from the threads on this site there would have been a good chance that this re-issue would have remained a hidden gem much longer.
