  • Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land, from Red Wasp Design

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted LandCall of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land, a mobile game for the iOS platform from Red Wasp Design is now out. We first reported on the mobile game last May and 30th January marks its release in the iTunes store.

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is a turn-based strategy RPG set in the trenches of World War I (returning to the horror of Lovecraft's Herbert West: Reanimator) and features nine 3D levels where you control "a team of up to six Investigators charged with uncovering a deadly inhuman conspiracy underlying the clash of empires of the Great War."...

The game's designer is Tomas Rawlings, who many will remember as the author of the Dark Mirror monograph for Call of Cthulhu.

From the Red Wasp Design Press Release:

After a year of intensive development, the small indie team of Red Wasp Design have announced that their anticipated title, Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land has launched on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The game is a turn-based strategy RPG inspired by the works of cult horror writer H.P. Lovecraft and developed in co-operation with Chaosium, the publishers of the cult horror role playing game, Call of Cthulhu.

The game is now out on iTunes and is a universal iOS app so the same game works for iPhone and iPod Touch both SD & HD and for iPad, and carries graphics optimised for each of those platforms. It is priced $4.99, £2.99 & €3.99 for the full universal app. The game's designer, Tomas Rawlings said, "We've put a vast amount of our time, energy and ideas into this game over the last year. It's been a long journey for us because we want to get it right. We're not a huge studio, but I hope that fellow gamers will appreciate what we've achieved with The Wasted Land."

The game features nine 3D levels set in the trenches of World War One. The player controls a team of up to six investigators charged with uncovering a deadly inhuman conspiracy underlying the clash of empires of the Great War. Barbed wire, mustard gas and machines guns will prove to be the least dangerous thing that the investigators will encounter as they venture out into no-man's land to solve the mystery of the Wasted Land. As the game progresses, the player can build up the skills, weapons and equipment of the team to suit their playing style. As well as the physical danger, the investigators must guard their sanity against the myriad horrors that threaten to destroy it.

To stay in touch with the developers and get updates on the game, help and strategy guides and more you can reach them via Twitter (@redwaspdesign) and on their site at redwaspdesign.com

Price: $4.99 (US), £2.99 & €3.99 (Universal app. for iOS Devices)

The game feels and looks great, but I am finding the touch controls on my iPhone are a tad less the good. It is frustrating to attempt to select characters and I find myself accidentally moving more often then I'd like. Most likely play on an iPad would prove to be a more satisfying experience. I also must add that the music at the start is very good, and might lead to an accidental san loss if I leave that screen open.

Aye the touch controls on the iPhone are annoying, but I would think on the iPad it'll be great. It also has a bug on one level where non of the background appeared, but this I am sure will be fixed. If your life is lacking a First World War, turn based combat game, which throws you at evil German occultists, then this is the game for you!

Is there a version for the PC as I hate ipads and iphones etc. Sorry guys just not into the whole touch screen nonsense. It reminds me of when I worked part time as a ticket machine assistant in London at a freezing cold train station when they first brought in the touchscreen ticket machines. Less than 5 percent of people could use them and mass panic was the usual response. This was 2004! Lol.
This reminds me of the days when GTA Vice City was only avaliable on the PS2.
If I bought an iphone or ipad this would be the only thing I would use it for, so I will hold out for now.
Kindles too, yuck. Can't drop it in the bath and dry it out later on the radiator.

Anyway does anyone know if this will be avaliable on Steam for the PC?

I think that a PC version is unlikely at the present. The team behind this is fairly small, which is why a number of bugs has managed to get into the final release. At the present I have it running on my iphone 3G and a bug causes the app to crash randomly.

Which is a pity as I really enjoy the concept of the game. An update is promised and with apple being reviewed that should fix the problem (or so they tell us) and when it does I know I'll have a new five minute wait app.

If you want to know more about them they have had an open development cycle for this game, posting to their blog about it for nine months or so. That blog is also why I think going to a PC version is unlikely, as they have made no mention of thinking like that.

I see version 1.2 is out, listing:
      • Improved controls; TOUCH & HOLD replaces double tap.
      • Added a pinch zoom.
      • Crash at the end of some turns/levels fixed.
      • Appearance of white textures on missions The Many Voices & Death By Gas fixed.
      • Fix so if Brightmeer dies in mission The Raid, the game is lost.

The new version does fix all the bugs I had personally seen with the game. Quite enjoying it overall. A turn based tactical game with the lovecraftian monster twist. If it was a larger company I would be upset at the price tag, but with the size of the team and the number of hours they have worked on it I feel it is completely worth it. (3 full time people and the people brought in to do the sounds I believe.)Worth a look anyway.

I finished it last night after a marathon session on Sunday when I realised 1.2 was out, fixed all the issues I had with the game and I really enjoyed the experience. If you have an iPad I heartily recommend this purchase.
