  • H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands

Chaosium have put H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands for Call of Cthulhu back into print after seven years.

The reprint of the 5th edition sees its release in both softcover and PDF formats, so if you missed it first time round or want an electronic version, it's now available from Chaosium.

On a note of trivia, when Sandy Petersen first pitched the idea of a Lovecraft-based RPG to Chaosium it was for the Dreamlands, which remains one of the most under-utilised Lovecraftian settings unless Pelgrane Press decide to pursue Paris...

    H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands

Roleplaying Beyond the Veil of Sleep

    We all dream...
H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands for Call of Cthulhu
For some, dreams can become reality. H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands provides everything needed for Call of Cthulhu or Cthulhu Dark Ages investigators to travel down the seven hundred steps, through the Gates of Deeper Slumber, and into the realm of dreams. Includes a travelogue of the Dreamlands, a huge gazetteer, Dreamlands character creation rules, over thirty prominent NPC's, over 60 monsters dwelling within the Dreamlands, descriptions of the Dreamlands gods and their cults, six adventures to help jump start a Dreamlands campaign, and a fold-out map of the Dreamlands by Andy Hopp.

Includes the adventures Pickman's Student; The Lemon Sails; To Sleep, Perchance to Dream; Season of the Witch; The Land of Lost Dreams; Captives of Two Worlds.
    • Chapter One: Through the Gate of Deeper Slumber, describes how to get to the Dreamlands, some of the basic rules that apply there, and how to leave afterward.
    • Chapter Two: The Atmosphere of Dreams, outlines a number of styles of Dreamlands keeping, and also offers some options for integrating Dreamlands adventures into an ongoing Waking World campaign.
    • Chapter Three: The Dream-Quest of Randolph Carter, provides a travelogue of the Dreamlands. It traces the journey of Randolph Carter when he searched for Unknown Kadath. In doing so it introduces many of the people and places in the Dreamlands.
    • Chapter Four: Gazetteer of the Dreamlands, offers a geographical survey of the Dreamlands by examining the distinct regions of: The East, The North, Oriab, The Seas, The South, The West, The Moon, The Underworld, and Worlds Beyond.
    • Chapter Five: People of the Dreamlands, lists a number of important non-player characters within the Dreamlands.
    • Chapter Six: The Dreamlands Bestiary, collects information on a number of creatures native to the Dreamlands and nearby dimensions.
    • Chapter Seven: Gods of the Dreamlands, is a religious overview of the Dreamlands. It lists the gods worshipped there, from the Lesser Dreamlands Deities to the fearsome Outer Gods.
    • Chapter Eight: The Dreamlands Grimoire, completes the background section by listing artefacts, tomes, and spells which can be found in the fantastical world of dreams.

What are the prime HPL writings that cover the Dreamlands? I've read my share of HPL but never any Dreamlands stories. Where do I start?

There is lots of them, like "The White Ship", "Celephaïs" "The Cats of Ulthar", "The Silver Key", And the most famous of them all is "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath".

Now would be a great time to see the complete campaign that Dennis Detwiller was writing for the Dreamlands, some of which appeared in Worlds of Cthulhu... -=b

Depending on how much cash I'm given at Xmas, I might have to look into this. Assuming I can find it on Amazon or elsewhere in the UK.

One of my favorite Cthulhu sourcebooks, and one of my favorite Lovecraftian settings! Personally, I think you can divide all of Lovecraft's work into pre-Dream-Quest (his Dunsany/Poe/Dreamlands pieces) and post-Dream-Quest (his more science-fiction-oriented, more Mythos-injokey pieces). I like the latter too, obviously, since Lovecraft would probably be unknown today had he died in 1926, but I'm fond of the florid weirdness of his early work.
