Life in Naat

A blog devoted to Clark Ashton Smith's world of Zothique as a possible Call of Cthulhu game setting.

"On Zothique, the last continent on Earth, the sun no longer shone with the whiteness of its prime, but was dim and tarnished as if with a vapor of blood. New stars without number had declared themselves in the heavens, and the shadows of the infinite had fallen closer. And out of the shadows, the older gods had returned to man: the gods forgotten since Hyperborea, since Mu and Poseidonis, bearing other names but the same attributes. And the elder demons had also returned, battening on the fumes of evil sacrifice, and fostering again the primordial sorceries."

  3. Zothique: Living with Contradictions

Given that it is CAS’s Birthday and a Friday the 13th, I felt compelled to post this before I completely worked through my thought processes on the topic entirely.

Originally I titled this blog post as “Resolving Contradictions” and intended to resolve three main questions that need some rationale when trying to fuse Zothique into Lovecraftian Lore. For the record, there are many more than three but these are the ones I think of as the biggies.

  4. Zothique: Post One

I think I was hooked on Zothique as soon as I read the poem "Zothique" in Lin Carter's 1970 Ballantine Edition of the Zothique tales.

Some time later I began to think that it would be a good basis for a Fantasy Campaign, but I never got around to working on it. Now that I am more fully embroiled in RPGS that collectively fall under the "... of Cthulhu" moniker, I have been thinking more and more about attempting to develop a Zothique campaign with Cthulhu mythos ...
