Anchorhead 20th Anniversary Edition

Some 20 years ago (about the time this web site was starting) Michael Gentry created one of the most well regarded Lovecraftian interactive fiction ("text adventure") games: Anchorhead. Now after two decades Michael has released a special anniversary edition of the adventure available through Steam and Itch, which features re-written code and prose, extra puzzles and more than 50 illustrations.

If you loved the old Anchorhead then there looks to be much to enjoy in the new version (you can even buy physical props). If you've never tried a computer text adventure before and like Lovecraftian atmosphere then Anchorhead may well be worth investigating further...

Anchorhead

You take a deep breath of salty air as the first raindrops begin to spatter the pavement, and the swollen, slate-covered clouds that blanket the sky mutter ominous portents amongst themselves over the little coastal town of Anchorhead.

Anchorhead is a text adventure game in the style of classic Infocom games from the 1980s. No graphics, no menus, no point-and-click — you navigate a written story using typed commands, and read what happens next.

Travel to the haunted coastal town of Anchorhead, Massachusetts and uncover the roots of a horrific conspiracy inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Search through musty archives and tomes of esoteric lore; dodge hostile townsfolk; combat a generation-spanning evil that threatens your family and the entire world.

To mark the twentieth anniversary of its initial publication, Anchorhead is now available in a special Illustrated Edition. Every aspect of the game has been rebuilt and redesigned from the ground up:

  • The code has been rewritten in Inform 7 and compiled to the glulx format, allowing far more detail and interactivity than before.
  • The prose has been revised and polished to reflect 20 years of accumulated writing experience.
  • Additional puzzles, scenes, and background information to explore.
  • Gameplay is enhanced with over 50 illustrations by Carlos Cara Àlvarez.

Price: $10 USD (purchase)

Will definitely be getting this as a post-exam treat! Also, it's nice to have an opportunity to reward Michael for a game I have loved for years. It's a little old-fashioned now in Interactive Fiction terms, but it's the best game of it's type, and I think still one of the best games ever (it frequently features in 'top 100 PC games' charts, pretty amazing for a text adventure).
